Shalimar is the premier Indian Restaraunt in HH. Right around the corner from the Gansemarkt U-bahn, after walking past the Marriot.
We have eaten there 8-10 times and it has been consistently good every time. The staff speaks English and of course German and makes the food different level of spicy for each nationality- If you are a 2-Star spice lover in the UK, add an extra star to your order just to be safe. Service is prompt and polite. Drinks, even beer, are a little expensive, but that is probably due to the location (bougie) more than anything.
The Butter Chicken and their sorbet are my choice for first timers.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Adam T.Hamburg, Duitsland3227520820 jan 2017
Great decor, decent service, decent food. I went here twice and ordered saag paneer with potato and pees both time. First time the food tasted a lot better than second so might be hit or miss depending on the night. I also ordered take-away the second time so this might have affected things.

So there's some sort of food festival going on outside the Rathaus at the moment, and Shalimar have a tent there. This is the best indian curry I've had in Germany thus far, quite mild, but then I chose a Chicken Tikka Masala style dish so you'd expect it. Tasty basmati rice, and the yoghurt and mango sauces are good too, but quite a small portion for 7 euro.
There are a lot of other establishments in the square right now, so it's well worth a look around.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Richard Frederik B.Mainz, Duitsland1144 feb 2016
I went to eat there with two colleagues. We reserved a table ahead of time, which turned out to be an unnecessary precaution when we arrived at 6.30pm. The interior is probably a question of taste--a bit too much for mine, but homely nonetheless.
The staff was friendly and quick. We ordered the mixed starters and had fun guessing what we were actually looking at. Deep-fried spinach, for instance, is a thing I had never tasted before; it definitely is the best form of spinach.
The main course (I had lamb karahi) was good. Not brilliant, but good. I was warned that the dish would be rather hot, but I don't think it was. I might be somewhat desensitised, though.
The waiters might have been a little overzealous, as the snitched the plates right from under our noses once we put our forks down, which did not contribute to a relaxed atmosphere.
A good Indian restaurant, but not an outstanding one, I'd say. I would go there again when I'm in the area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype Gebruiker (Deezo…)Hamburg, Duitsland371995919 jun 2010
Shalimar
where do i begin.
Maybe ill begin with the end: Never again!
40EUR/person!
i mean what the hell? its only indian food!
Horrible service
we had to wait 55 minutes to get served.
55 minutes... i mean what the heck?
We asked for wine rosé we got white wine
i asked for lamm mogulai, i got lamm bhuna...
they charge 2EUR/naan bread
and around 1EUR50 / papadam bread
this is extortion
The waiter was SOOOO unfriendly, this is unacceptable. He'd come up to our table and really he'd scare me. He wouldnt smile, just stare at us with his horribly angry eyes.
Portions are really small compared to the price
18EUR for a hauptgericht and i get 5 pieces of meat... honestly
Gourmet indian... ive never heard of that!
When i complained to the waiter that he got half of our order wrong his reply was: but its the same price?!
I said yeah but i didnt get what i ordered...
No amends made... surprisingly disappointing
I cant see the good side of that restaurant...
i wont EVER be back again... EVERHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mark G.Baltimore, Verenigde Staten201413 jun 2017
The aroma at the entrance to Shalimar was enticing. The "Maharaja Menu" enticed so we ordered it. Never before have we encountered such dismal service in an Indian restaurant. In 90 minutes they had served us pappadums with 3 chutneys, naan, then a half portion of shrimp with spinach - tasty but I could feel the oil in it bring out pimples on ,my face...then after a further wait the waiter brought us half a cup of mulligatawny. each After sitting there for 90 minutes staring out the window at several women's spa service shops we said "time's up" We'll pay for what we ate and drank (1.5 bottles of still mineral water". They charged us for the water and we charged out of the place in search of berries elsewhere.

Shalimar is located in a calm courtyard close to Gänsemarkt. The restaurant is decorated very nicely. The waiters were very nice and the food was served quickly. The dishes were good and the size was perfect.
The entrance is even with the ground.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype Gebruiker (Kittle…)Londen, Verenigd Koninkrijk501193414 sep 2007
Lunch today at the Shalimar tent- was quite happy with the prospect of a good curry.
The lamb curry was very tasty although it could have done with some chilli in it as it was far too mild for an Indian curry a bit light on the spices as well.
I agree with Phil the portions were too small even for someone like me who is considered a light eater.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Adelaide O.Los Angeles, Verenigde Staten33564198 apr 2011
Wow! This place is tucked away in the courtyard of what I think is an apartment complex, but you can already tell from the outside that this place is really neat-o! The decorations are absolutely amazing. It was quite the experience. The lunch special was a great price, and the lady serving us was so nice. Their mango lassi is a bit thicker, and their curries are a little more watery than I'm used to. But it tastes really good. My husband's plate tasted a lot better than mine though. But I can't remember what it was! It had chicken and was higher up on the menu than my chicken curry. If I ever go visit Hamburg again, I'll definitely want to come back here.

Disappointing. The food was average. The service rushed us first through ordering and then hurried us through the meal. The wine we chose wasn't available and the alternative they gave us didn't suit Indian food at all. Won't be going back.
