The old rule if you see a big line, get in it, stays true here at Bakkerij Goossens.
Chocolate bread was our choice and it was amazing. Soft sourdough with lots & lots of hunks of semisweet chocolate to give it a little bit of sweetness but combined with the sourdough
It was bread perfection! There were lots of other temptations ranging from tarts of all kinds like apple, chocolate & pear & apricot but we were leaving that same day & could not indulge.......same for their loaves & loaves of different breads that looked way too delicious
Next time!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Gemma H.New York City, Verenigde Staten136811 sep 2022

Bakkerij Goossens is an old fashioned bakery located in the Wilde Zee.
The huge line outside is a testament to the delicious baked goods that lie inside.
I can't help myself if I'm passing by - I have to buy a "lange thee koekje". They have the best in Antwerp!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Melissa W.San Diego, Verenigde Staten41250189 apr 2017
I was visiting Antwerp from the States and NEEDED to stop at Goossens to try out something. The pastries looked delicious, but I didn't know if we should get a pastry or their famous rye raisin bread (roggeverdommeke)....impulsely decided to try the rye raisin bread since that's what they're famous for.
Well, that was a let down. We sat outside and took a slice and...yep, tastes like bread. With raisins. And the bread is somewhat dry and very, very dense. I carried that dense loaf of bread around with me the rest of the day, not knowing what to do with it. We ended up eating some the next day, toasted with jelly, but it was still just bread....ended up dumping the rest in the trash since we had other cities to visit and that thing was weighing me down. I'm just saying--if you're visiting Goossens, maybe go for a pastry that jumps off the shelves at you and calls your name. Don't go for the boring looking rye bread just because it's famous.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tess C.Montréal, Canada1412 feb 2019
I still remember the Bakkerij fondly. Their bread is out of this world, full of nuts and pieces of fruit, like dried mangoes and papaya among others. You don't even have to add anything, the bread is delicious by itself! The staff is also really nice and will slice your bread for you. How I wish I had a Bakkerij in my hometown!

Now this is a good one. On your visit to Antwerp, queue here, while waiting your turn, repeat (silently) your order. When it is your turn, say aloud "A rogge verdoemmeke, please".
The bread you'll get is probably the best rye (=rogge) bread with raisins (=verdoemme) you'll ever taste.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mouse H.Manhattan, Verenigde Staten01714 apr 2012
Everything in this bakery is DELICIOUS! I live in NYC and I still dream about this bakery. The treats instantly put a smile on your face with wide eyes and a panicked thought of 'why didn't I buy more??!!"
I love ALL of the cookies, the sugar bread...everything actually, this bakery can do no wrong. Thanks for the great memories Goossens :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sharon A.Brussel, België831405012 sep 2013
Everything is extra tasty here, because you probably had to wait outside for 10 minutes! It's so worth the wait. Be sure to order raisin bread & cookies!
